Small Carton, Big Impact

Small Carton, Big Impact: Why Our Packaging Matters

At First Choice, we believe sustainability is a shared responsibility. That’s why our UHT milk cartons are made using renewable materials — packaging that protects both your milk and the planet.

What Makes Our Cartons Sustainable?

Our UHT milk comes in a Tetra Pak® carton that’s mostly made from FSC®-certified paperboard. This certification guarantees that the paper comes from forests that are responsibly managed to protect biodiversity, support the rights of workers and local communities, and prevent deforestation.

But it doesn’t stop there.

The cap and some of the protective layers of the carton are made from plant-based plastic derived from sugarcane — a fast-growing, renewable crop. The sugarcane we use is Bonsucro-certified, meaning it’s grown and harvested in a way that meets strict social and environmental standards. This ensures fair labour conditions, reduced water and energy use, and responsible land management.

By using these certified renewable materials, we’re reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and making our packaging more sustainable — without compromising on quality or freshness.

Why It Matters

Renewable materials like FSC®-certified paperboard and Bonsucro-certified plant-based plastic help cut down greenhouse gas emissions and reduce our reliance on limited natural resources. It’s a smarter way to package milk — one that supports a circular economy and a healthier planet.

How to Recycle Your First Choice UHT Carton:

  • Recycling is simple — and your effort really makes a difference.
  • Finish the milk – Make sure the carton is empty.
  • Give it a quick rinse – This helps keep recycling clean.
  • Flatten the carton – Saves space in your bin and during transport.
  • Leave the cap on – It’s made from recyclable sugarcane-based plastic.
  • Recycle it – Pop it into your recycling bin if your area accepts cartons (check your local guidelines).

Tip: Some Milk & Bread Stores or First Choice Dairy Shops have Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) where you can drop off cartons. It’s another easy way to give them a second life.

Your recycled carton could be turned into tissue paper, cardboard boxes, school desks or even eco-friendly building materials, like roof sheeting and wall panels.
